ドルパ・トレック

9.Dolpa Trek

Dolpa Trek - 28 Days

Dolpa is the most remote and least developed district situated in the Trans Himalayan region of mid-western Nepal. It has fascinating villages and is still a land of mystery, scenery and peace. Though a few anthropologists and geographers explored the region, the entire district was closed to foreigners until 1989, when the southern part of Dolpa, including the Ringmo or Phoksundo lake was opened to organized trekking groups. Later, the northern part also was opened.

The region abounds in a host of snow peaks, including the seventh highest peak in the world, Dhaulagiri(8,168m) and also has the country's deepest lake Phoksundo. The Phoksundo National Park (3,555 km) is endowed with the luxurious forests of the lower Himalayan region near the desert-like landscape of the Trans Himalayan region with alpine flora and fauna similar to the Tibetan Plateau. The Tibetan hare (Lepus Capasis), Himalayan weasel (mustera sibirica), and snow leopard (panther unican) are the typical mammals of this region. One can reach Dolpa from Jumla, Dhorpatan and Surkhet. There is an airport named Dolpa at Jupal, a half day from the district headquarter in Dunai. This trek terminates with a flight from Jupal to Nepalgunj and travel by bus or fly back to Kathmandu.

This trek begins from Naudanda (1,525m) after Pokhara, enters Barbung Khola that follows between the Dhaulagiri and Kanjroba Himalayan ranges. The trek to Phoksundo lake (3,613m), located deep in the Kanjiroba Himal, on the way to Shey-Gompa, provides unprecedented an adventure to this high, remote and exotic land. Mountains view are spectacular, the culture is unique and unspoiled and the chances to see rare animals ar plenty.

Day 1 Sarangkot 1585m 2 1/2 to 3 hrs climb

Site of an Old fort (KOT) an outstanding view point. Trek starts with a short drive to Bindeswari Temple and then it is an 2 1/2 to 3 hours climb to Sarangkot. From here the Annapurna lie immediately to the north with Annapurna I (26545'/8,091m) visible behind Annapurna South (23683'/7,219m) The ranges stretches east with Machhapuchre.(The Fishtail) dominating the Pokhara valley, and Manaslu (26658'/8,156m) and Himalchuli also visible.

Day 2 Salyan 1615m 1 1/2 walking hrs

The trail traverses along the southern slopes of the Kaski ridge, below the crest. Pass Kaski village and after about 1 1/2 hours reach Naudanda (4782'/1,450m) a large village. The main trade route leading to the Kali Gandaki, Mustang and Tibet joins the trail from the Yandi Khola here and pony /mule trains will be frequently met until we leave this trail(and most other trekkers) and contour south to Salyan.

Day 3 Dobila 1158m

Delightful mornings walk through scattered Gurung villages before dropping steeply through a forest of fine mature pine. After lunch near the large village of Tihar the route follows the line of the Modi Khola which drains the Annapurna Sanctuary down to Dobila. Camp near the river.

Day 4 Baglung 948m

The Modi is crossed by a good bridge and Kusma is reached after a steady climb. The trail now descends down to the Kali Gandaki valley and follows on the east bank to the bridge at Khaniyaghat below Baglung town.

Day 5 Tatopani - Nayangdi River 945m

The trail follows the Kali Gandaki until we turn west up the Nayangdi Khola valley. Good river camp sites beyond the village-not to be confused with its more famous name-sake further up the Kali Gandaki valley.

Day 6 Dharapani 1524m

From Tatopani to Darbang the track keeps mainly on the north bank of the river but may cross to the south side a short distance beyond Tatopani, re-crossing later, in order to avoid landslip on the north bank. At Darbang the Nayangdi changes courses and forms a "dog's legs" now flowing from north to south. The track crossed the river at Darbang and keeps henceforth on the west side of the river. A side stream, the Danga Khola, providing a possible camp site, is crossed 2 miles beyond Darbang, and from here the track climbs steeply to Dharapani.

After 2 hour gradual descent, we approach Humri Bhanjyang market and again we gradually climb on a straight trail to Ramche and camp. From here you have good views of the Boudha Himal and Gorkha Himal

Day 7 Lumsur 2195m

Passing Takum, and Runa the track which has been running high above the river on the west side of the Nayangdi turns west up the Dara Khola to Lumsum.

Day 8 Utter Ganga/Sinudar Khola 2743m

The trail runs up the side of the Lumum stream (Bhara khola) and then crosses it and climbs steeply, passing the hamlet of Moreni. After 4 miles the track levels off at an altitude of 3,354m and winds for about 2 miles past cattle pastures and a few huts before descending into the head of the Dhorpatan valley, known also as the Uttar Ganga ("Northern River"). From the high Jaljala ridge there are magnificent views of the whole of the Dhaulagiri range. This is one of the great day's walks in the hills of Nepal. Camp near the pass.

Day 9 Dhorpatan 3011m

The name Dhorpatan is applied to a collection of settlements lying along the valley of the Uttar Ganga, the largest being known as Nauthar, situated about 5 miles from the last campsite. Here there is an airstrip, and there is also radio communication with Kathmandu. Formerly the Dhorpatan alley served mainly as summer pastures for the Magar and other tribesmen living in the valleys to the south in the late 1950s and early 1960s, however, a number of Tibetan refugees were settled here with the aid of Swiss Red Cross, and it is now they who form the bulk of the permanent population. This broad, flat valley, more or less unique is the tangled hills and gorge country of Northern Nepal, is well worth a visit. Under the plan now proposed this would be down in the day from the Uttar Ganga/Simidar Khola Campsite, returning for the night. Time can be spent around then Jaljala/Dhorpatan area as required.

Day 10 Phagunr Dhuri Pass 3963m 6-8 walking hrs

Leaving the valley of the Uttar Ganga River at Dhorpatan with its large settlements of recently established Tibetan villages the trail climbs northwards. Walking into the pine clad hillside the last of the slate roofed houses are left behind. The trail climbs steadily to the pass at 13,000 feet (3,960m). From the pass the peaks of the Dhaulagiri Massif on the far side at about 12,5000 feet.

Day 11 Kyami Danda 3109m

From Phagune Dhuri the trail drops through thick forest and an open glade at Thinkur to the Gustung Khola where lunch can be had as there is no water from here until camp. From the Gustung Khola the trail climbs steeply through forest to the ridgeline with views west towards the Bheri depression and northwards towards the snow clad mountains. The campsite at Kyami Danda is a small grassy opening on the ridgeline.

Day 12 Dulby 3202m 6-7 hrs hike

Descend steeply to the village of Pelma with a primary school and about ten families of Kamis, Chettris and Magars. A taste of the flat roofed architecture that is universal from here on. The village of Yamkar on the opposite side above the Pelma Khola is reached in another hour. Lunch stop here or at the river below. The trail to the villages of Malikot branches off towards the west from here while the trail to Duley climbs steeply to the ridge above Yamkhar. From the ridge descend slightly through forested hillsides to ascend again to a 5-hut tea-shop stop of Duley in a small clearing in the forest.

Day 13 Phupall Daha 4230m 6 walking hrs

Leaving Duley the trail climbs about 2,000 feet to Duley Dewrali and then drops down into the Sheng Khola gorge. Follow the stream along the right bank up the tortiously carved valley through crumbling shell mountainsides. Lunch at a side stream coming off the hillside. the trail continues up the valley passing shepherds' huts and several streams to turn right leaving the river to climb to a small marshy lake called Phupal Daha. there is a beautiful camp site here.

Day 14 Above Sahar Tara 3170m 8-9 walking hrs, depends on snow conditions

Leaving camp the trail climbs gradually for about 500 feet to Phupal Bhanjyang. Now we are cutting across the Dhaulagiri Range with the Churne Himal just visible to the north. From here it is a two mile gradual descent to the Saure Khola which also offers excellent camping sites. This area is rich in wildlife like the blue sheep, herds of which can be observed grazing on the mountainsides. Himalayan fox, another rare animal, might also be seen around here. After crossing the Aaure Stream the trail climbs steadily for about 1,500 feet to the Jangla Bhanjyang at an altitude of 14,400 feet. Marked by the customary pile of rocks and prayer flags fluttering in the wild the pass cuts through a cleft between two hillocks. Below the pass the trail descends gradually to the Thanke Danda from where views towards the Kagmara Range and further to the Kanjiroba Himal are very good. The Bheri valley at Dunai, and down to the right, the villages around Tarakot are also visible. Continue down the treeline to camp in an opening well above the first village. Today's lunch can be had before crossing the pass on open grassy lawn by the stream or packed lunch to be provided in snow bound conditions.

Day 15 Tarakot 2561m 3-4 walking hrs

Today's walk is a short but steep descent through Samthaling Gaon and Saharatara to Tarakot. Situated above the Barbung Khola these villages are inhabited by Kham Magars, an ethnic group with animistic traditions. With their flat roofed houses these villages are reminiscent of Pueblo Indian settlements. Camp can be set up directly below the village of Tarakot besides the small stream. From here the monastery of Tarakot is immediately behind and above the camp on a ridge and can be visited in the afternoon. Lunch at camp.

Day 16 Dunai 2042m 6 walking hrs

Leaving Tarakot the trail descends west to the police post where trek permits might be inspected. Just below here cross the Barbung Khola by a suspension bridge continue first through cultivated hillsides and then along pine clad valley to Dunai. Dunai is the administrative headquarters of Dolpa district and has a police checkpost and other Government offices.Camp on the riverside just outside the town. Lunch stop at a little stream en route.

Day 17 Cherpa Village 2591m 7-8 walking hrs

Leaving Dunai the trail climbs immediately up the hill side to the north. The confluence of the Barbung Khola with the Suli Gad can be viewed from above marking the two principal tributaries of the Thulo Bheri River which drains into the great Karnali. Continue high above the Suli Gad to the village of Rohangaon. After lunch here continue descending slightly to the Army Post at Ankey marking the entrance to the Shey Phoksundo National Park. Camp can be set up at the single house settlement at Cherpa on fields or further on under walnut trees in a small clearing by the streamside.

Day 18 Reyaji Village 2927m 6 walking hrs

The trail stays well above the river in the lush forest from here. The Suli Gad valley is forested by thick strands of Juniper trees - probably the finest seen anywhere in Nepal. Climbing again for above the river the trail reaches an altitude of 10,500 feet only to plunge down to the river again. Lunch at the river and continue through the forest along the river to a bridge at Riyaji village an inconspicuous settlement on the opposite bank where camp can be set up for the night.

Day 19 Phoksundo Lake 3506m 6 walking hrs

Continuing along the left bank of the river the trail reaches the confluence of the Suli Gad with Pungmo Mala. Above here is the Park Headquarters and the warden's office at a place called Sumdo where park entrance fees are collected. The road to Murwa village is along the left bank and the trail towards Phoksindo is on the opposite side crossed here by a wooden bridge. A little farther on lunch can be had by the river. After lunch the summer settlement of Palmo is reached along the river. After lunch the summer settlement of Palmo is reached in a short while. From here the trail starts to climb steeply towards Phoksundo and the great waterfall can be sen down below the trail from the top of this climb. The lake of Phoksundo is seen in the depression beyond the great wall-like ridge. The waters of this mountain lake is a deep blue formation that some call turquoise and others lapis lazuli. Camp past the village of Ringmo on the southern shore by the river that drains the lake. The villagers here are the followers of B'on the old shamanistic religion of Tibet.

Day 20 Pungmo Village 3170m 4 walking hrs

After a night at this wonderful campsite besides the clear waters of the lake we retrace out steps back down to Sumlo form where we will follow the trail north-west up the Pungmo Nala to the small B'on village of Pungmo. Camp is there up near the village after a half day's walk. After lunch there will be enough time to explore the village and the enthusiasts can visit the B'on Monastery about two hours walk up the hill side across the river from here.

Day 21 Below Kangmara Pass 4207m 6-7 walking hrs

From Pungmo the trail leads up the valley along the left bank to cross it about two hours from here to the right hand bank. Views of the Kangchunne and Kanjeilarwa peaks are very nice along today's walk. The valley is well forested with juniper and birch, and wild animals like the musk deer inhabit this area. Further up the valley blue sheep might be seen on the mountain slopes. The trail climbs steadily turning westward once above treeline and keeping high above the river. Camp is made on some level ground below the Kangmara Pass at the altitude of 13,800 feet.

Day 22 Kanglakpak 3353m 8-9 walking hrs, depends on snow conditions

An early start climbing steadily uphill to the pass at an altitude of 16,100 feet. From here the summits of Kagwara I towards the south is visible nearby and many other peaks of the range also are visible. Views west towards the Sisne and Patrasi Himal and northwards to Kanjiroba are striking. The trail descends steeply towards the west and a long downhill walk of about five hours will bring us to a small campsite below the peak of Kangmara V. The river we have been following this afternoon is called the Garpung Khola.

Day 23 Hurikot 2652m 6 waking hrs

Following the Gharpung Khola high above it along the right bank the trail turns north above the confluence with the Jagdulla Khola to descend down to the Army Check Post. After crossing the Jadulla Khola to the right bank here the trail follows well forested valley to the village of Hurikot where camp is set up for the night. Hurikot is largish village where the people claim to be Chettris of Rokai, Barwai, Burathoi and Thakuri families. Here also some Bhotes from Saldang spend the winter grinding maize at the water mills run by Kamis of this village.

Day 24 River Camp 3506m 6-7 walking hrs

Crossing the stream coming off the Jagdulla Lekh at Hurikot the trail goes up along the ridge to the north-west to climb Barbarey Lekh Pass at an altitude of about 12,500 feet. This is a longish gradual climb and the pass itself is a long ridgeline quite unlike most passes. Views north towards the Kanjiroba Himal are very fine from here. Descending into a fine forest of pine, spruce, fir, and oak camp is made in a forest clearing beside the river flowing down this valley.

Day 25 Dillikot Village 2622m 6 walking hrs

From camp below Barbarey Lekh we follow the trail down steam through oak and pine forest to the village of Chorta also known as Napukuna past another small settlement of newly established village. Lunch can be had here near this quaint village by the river. Continuing down stream the confluence at the Tila Khola near Dillkot is reached in about two hours. Here the trail turns right down the Tila stream and camp can be established on fine meadows past the village.

Day 26 Garjankot 2622m 6 walking hrs

Following the Tila Stream the trail runs below the villages of Muni Gaon and then Kuri Gaon to climb up a side stream coming down from the left just short of Guthi Gaon. Climbing steadily the sheep farm at Guthichaur is reached in another hour where lunch can be had. Another half hour's walk will bring the trail descending steadily past fine grazing grounds to the village of Garjankot once again above the Tila Khola. There is camping place above and below the village.

Day 27 Jumla 2317m 3 walking hrs

A half day's walk along the wide Tila valley past paddy fields and the village of Dipayal brings the trek to Jumla Town where camp is set up near the airstrip. After lunch there will be time to visit the town and relax at camp.

Day 28 Fly Jumla to Nepalgunj and Kathmandu

Note: All heights are approximate at best. We had two altimeters which we used set at Kathmandu airport at 4,400 feet. It was shown to record about 600 feet less than altitudes given in trekking maps and other books. Although the heights might be approximate it gives a good idea of altitude gained/lost on a day to day basis along the trail which will be of great help.

UPPER DOLPA TREK: 27 Days

Dolpa is the most remote and least development situated in the Trans
Himalayan region of mid-western Nepal.  It has fascinating villages and is
still a land of mystery, scenery and peace.  Though a few anthropologists
and geographers explored the region, the entire district was closed to
foreigners until 1989, when the southern part of Dolpa, including the Ringmo
or Phoksundo Lake was opened to organized trekking groups only.  The north
side of Phoksundo Lake is still closed to foreigners.  However, it is
possible to visit Tibetan style ‘Inner Dolpa’ villages in Tarap and
Phoksundo Lake.  Both Buddhist and Hindu people inhabiting the whole region
equally.

The region abounds in a host of snow peaks including the seventh-highest
peak in the world  Dhaulagiri (8168m) and also has the country’s deepest
lake Phoksundo.  The Phoksundo National Park (3555km) is endowed with the
luxurious forests of the lower Himalayan region near the desert-like
landscape of the Trans Himalayan region with alpine flora and fauna similar
to the Tibetan Plateau.  The Tibetan here (Lepus Capasis), Himalayan weasel
(mustera sibirica), and snow leopard (panther unican) are the typical
mammals of this region.  We commance our trek by flying to small airstrip
Jumla and it terminates with a flight from Jupal to Nepalgunj and travel by
bus or fly back to Kathmandu.

Daily itinerary:

Day 1                                       Arrival in Kathmandu 1400m
Overnight at hotel
Arrival in Kathmandu-check in Hotel and sightseeing around Durbar Square
Kathmandu Durbar Square:
This large square is the historic seat of the Nepalese Royalty. The square,
with its old temples and palaces, epitomizes the religious and cultural life
of the people. It is here where Kings of Nepal are crowned.

Day 2                                       Sightseeing in Katrhmandu,
O/night at hotel

Sightseeing Pashupatinath, Bouddhanath and Mahadev Temple.

Pashupatinath:
Pashupatinath is one of the famous Hindu Temples in the world and is a
prilgrimage site for many people across southern Asia. It is located in the
banks of Bagmati River and is a cremation site for Hindu people. This famous
Shiva temple is said to have been built by Lichchhavi King, Supuspadeva in
465 - 500 AD.

Bouddhanath:

The stupa of Boudhanath lies eight Kilometers east of Kathmandu. This is a
colossal and an ancient stupa, one of the biggest in the world, are the
all-seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. It is said to have been renovated by
Lichchhivi King Mana Dev in the fifth century A.D. It is built on an
octagonal base inset with prayer wheels.

Swayambhunath:

This is one of the world's most glorious Buddhist stupas. It is said to be
2000 years old and visitors often call it the "Monkey Temple". The Stupa,
which forms the mail structure, is made of a solid hemisphere of brick and
clay supporting a lofty conical spire capped by a pinnacle of copper gilt.
Painted on the four sides of the spire are the all-seeing eyes of Lord
Buddha. It is three kilometers west of Kathmandu city. This hill is a mosaic
of small Stupas and pagoda temples. The very fact that the hillock was an
island when the valley was a lake and "Manjushree" cut a gorge through
Chobhar by his sword to drain the water from this lake has his temple near
Swayambhu indicates the importance of this site. The word Swayambhu means
self-created. There is a large number of monkeys in the area of the hill
which is also a wooded park. You have to be careful to take any package,
which could be snatched.

Day 3 Kathmandu - Nepalgunj O/night (Hotel)
Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, a flight of over an hour down into the Terai of West
Nepal.   Overnight  in hotel.  This is normally necessary because the Twin
Otter flights going to remote airfields in West Nepal operate in the early
morning due to wind build-up later in the day.  The two hotels in Nepalgunj
are not exactly ‘five star’ and we hope clients will be understanding of
the conditions.

Day 4 Nepalgunj  to JUPHAL 2475m and trek to DUNAI 2140m
3 walking hours
The flight from Nepalganj to Dunai is short but exciting, and landing a
heart -stopping affair typical of so many grass-strip landings in upcountry
Nepal. The trail to Dunai descends past the houses heading roughly
south-east fields, and shortly comes to a large village of DANGI BHARA built
on terraces looking up valley.

We pass through the Dangi Bhara and continue between more fields of maize
(sweet corn). About one hour from Juphal reach the bed of the valley at
group of houses protected from evil spirits by a crudely craved wooden
figure placed at the upstream end of the village. Dunai is a large village
with a paved street lined with houses, several shops and a lodge standing a
statue in the city centre.

Day 5 Tarakot 2537m
5 walking hours

The continuing route remains on the south bank of the river heading upstream
on a good trail. A little beyond this the way leads past a small,
flat-roofed water mill. Upper Dunai can be seen perched high above the
right, but our route drops left to cross the river on a wooden bridge and
then heads right to continue upstream.

Tarakot lies at a cross roads, though that is not immediately evident at the
check-post main. The cross country route from Pokhara comes this way. In
times gone by it was capital of independent kingdom of Tichurong, the
'Vallley of Fragrant water'. Terraced fields of buckwheat, millet and
potatoes have been stepped down the hillside below the village.

Day 6 Khanigaun 2950m
4 waling hours

We contour way above the river eventually the trial crosses a side stream
among all tall cypresses. Across the bridge the way than slopes down in
dusty braiding between the trees, then rises again to a small pasture with a
stone shelter tucked against the mountain wall. Shortly after this the trial
scrambles among rocks and boulders at river level, before climbing a series
of magnificently constructed stairways built against soaring slabs. These
lead to a large new suspension bridge name "Shahartara Suspension Bridge"
spanning the Barbung Khola just below its confluence with the Tarap Khola.

Day 7 Chukore 3441m
6 walking hours

After the breakfast, we head up from the check-post at Khanigaon, following
the trail along the valley among trees on the west bank of the Tarap Khola.
The way rises steeply in places and becomes a well-made track that avoids a
narrow gorge squeezing the river a short way upstream of the village. Very
briefly the trial makes a contour among low-growing trees and shrubs before
climbing again with the gorge narrowing to a tight V shaped ahead.

Beyond this valley becomes a delight of cropped meadows beside the river,
with dapped trees and shrubs and gravel bars spreading the Tarap Khola, a
finger-like streams and waterfalls spraying down the steep rock walls.

Day 8 Kamokharka 4000m
6 walking hours
We cross the east bank of the Tarap Khola and wander upstream through a very
narrow section of gorge where in places the towering a very narrow section
of gorge where in places the towering walls are no more than about 50 meters
apart.

At one point the trail is tucked under huge overhanging cliffs on the
right-hand side of the river. Just beyond this, the valley appears to have
been almost completely blocked by a large brown hill up which the way climbs
to an obvious saddle, heavily eroded and tripped by a stupa. Not long after
this, the trail makes a belvedere along the hillside, rises to a minor pass
marked by a mani wall, then slopes down onto a large yak pasture of
KAMOKHARKA.

Day 9  Dho 3944m
3 walking hours

The trail to Dho from Kamokharka is a short and easy one without too much
height gain. It sets of across the meadow dodging several little streams
that meander through it and in a little over half an hour crosses a wooden
bridge to the east bank where an important tributary valley opens out to the
right. Ignore this and continue into the final section of a gorge, walking
along the stony valley bed. The trail rises in two or three steps where yak
pastures are used by Tarap villagers.

DHO stands at junction of two valleys. There is plenty of room for camping,
and would be good place to spend two or three days acclimatizing and
exploring. The main Tarap valley stretches ahead, broad and flat-bottomed
and walled `by big rolling mountains. The right-hand valley leads to the
Charkula Bhanjyang (also known as the chharka La; 5300m by which a cross
country route may be followed to Mustang.

Meaning 'the lower end of the valley' Dho is the first real Tibetan style
Dolpo village seen on this trek. In summer the broad valley beyond is
captured with fields of barley and buckwheat. In the autumn after the
harvest, women in gaily-stripped homespun fabric, and wearing strange metal
head-gear, are seen at work threshing in low walled compounds. The monastery
which stands on the hillside just above the village is worth visiting, not
only for its cultural interest, but also for magnificent view enjoyed from
there.
