Dolpa Trek - 28 Days
Dolpa is the most remote and least developed district situated in the Trans Himalayan region of mid-western Nepal. It has fascinating villages and is still a land of mystery, scenery and peace. Though a few anthropologists and geographers explored the region, the entire district was closed to foreigners until 1989, when the southern part of Dolpa, including the Ringmo or Phoksundo lake was opened to organized trekking groups. Later, the northern part also was opened.
The region abounds in a host of snow peaks, including the seventh highest peak in the world, Dhaulagiri(8,168m) and also has the country's deepest lake Phoksundo. The Phoksundo National Park (3,555 km) is endowed with the luxurious forests of the lower Himalayan region near the desert-like landscape of the Trans Himalayan region with alpine flora and fauna similar to the Tibetan Plateau. The Tibetan hare (Lepus Capasis), Himalayan weasel (mustera sibirica), and snow leopard (panther unican) are the typical mammals of this region. One can reach Dolpa from Jumla, Dhorpatan and Surkhet. There is an airport named Dolpa at Jupal, a half day from the district headquarter in Dunai. This trek terminates with a flight from Jupal to Nepalgunj and travel by bus or fly back to Kathmandu.
This trek begins from Naudanda (1,525m) after Pokhara, enters Barbung Khola that follows between the Dhaulagiri and Kanjroba Himalayan ranges. The trek to Phoksundo lake (3,613m), located deep in the Kanjiroba Himal, on the way to Shey-Gompa, provides unprecedented an adventure to this high, remote and exotic land. Mountains view are spectacular, the culture is unique and unspoiled and the chances to see rare animals ar plenty.
Day 1 Sarangkot 1585m 2 1/2 to 3 hrs climb
Site of an Old fort (KOT) an outstanding view point. Trek starts with a short drive to Bindeswari Temple and then it is an 2 1/2 to 3 hours climb to Sarangkot. From here the Annapurna lie immediately to the north with Annapurna I (26545'/8,091m) visible behind Annapurna South (23683'/7,219m) The ranges stretches east with Machhapuchre.(The Fishtail) dominating the Pokhara valley, and Manaslu (26658'/8,156m) and Himalchuli also visible.
Day 2 Salyan 1615m 1 1/2 walking hrs
The trail traverses along the southern slopes of the Kaski ridge, below the crest. Pass Kaski village and after about 1 1/2 hours reach Naudanda (4782'/1,450m) a large village. The main trade route leading to the Kali Gandaki, Mustang and Tibet joins the trail from the Yandi Khola here and pony /mule trains will be frequently met until we leave this trail(and most other trekkers) and contour south to Salyan.
Day 3 Dobila 1158m
Delightful mornings walk through scattered Gurung villages before dropping steeply through a forest of fine mature pine. After lunch near the large village of Tihar the route follows the line of the Modi Khola which drains the Annapurna Sanctuary down to Dobila. Camp near the river.
Day 4 Baglung 948m
The Modi is crossed by a good bridge and Kusma is reached after a steady climb. The trail now descends down to the Kali Gandaki valley and follows on the east bank to the bridge at Khaniyaghat below Baglung town.
Day 5 Tatopani - Nayangdi River 945m
The trail follows the Kali Gandaki until we turn west up the Nayangdi Khola valley. Good river camp sites beyond the village-not to be confused with its more famous name-sake further up the Kali Gandaki valley.
Day 6 Dharapani 1524m
From Tatopani to Darbang the track keeps mainly on the north bank of the river but may cross to the south side a short distance beyond Tatopani, re-crossing later, in order to avoid landslip on the north bank. At Darbang the Nayangdi changes courses and forms a "dog's legs" now flowing from north to south. The track crossed the river at Darbang and keeps henceforth on the west side of the river. A side stream, the Danga Khola, providing a possible camp site, is crossed 2 miles beyond Darbang, and from here the track climbs steeply to Dharapani.
After 2 hour gradual descent, we approach Humri Bhanjyang market and again we gradually climb on a straight trail to Ramche and camp. From here you have good views of the Boudha Himal and Gorkha Himal
Day 7 Lumsur 2195m
Passing Takum, and Runa the track which has been running high above the river on the west side of the Nayangdi turns west up the Dara Khola to Lumsum.
Day 8 Utter Ganga/Sinudar Khola 2743m
The trail runs up the side of the Lumum stream (Bhara khola) and then crosses it and climbs steeply, passing the hamlet of Moreni. After 4 miles the track levels off at an altitude of 3,354m and winds for about 2 miles past cattle pastures and a few huts before descending into the head of the Dhorpatan valley, known also as the Uttar Ganga ("Northern River"). From the high Jaljala ridge there are magnificent views of the whole of the Dhaulagiri range. This is one of the great day's walks in the hills of Nepal. Camp near the pass.
Day 9 Dhorpatan 3011m
The name Dhorpatan is applied to a collection of settlements lying along the valley of the Uttar Ganga, the largest being known as Nauthar, situated about 5 miles from the last campsite. Here there is an airstrip, and there is also radio communication with Kathmandu. Formerly the Dhorpatan alley served mainly as summer pastures for the Magar and other tribesmen living in the valleys to the south in the late 1950s and early 1960s, however, a number of Tibetan refugees were settled here with the aid of Swiss Red Cross, and it is now they who form the bulk of the permanent population. This broad, flat valley, more or less unique is the tangled hills and gorge country of Northern Nepal, is well worth a visit. Under the plan now proposed this would be down in the day from the Uttar Ganga/Simidar Khola Campsite, returning for the night. Time can be spent around then Jaljala/Dhorpatan area as required.
Day 10 Phagunr Dhuri Pass 3963m 6-8 walking hrs
Leaving the valley of the Uttar Ganga River at Dhorpatan with its large settlements of recently established Tibetan villages the trail climbs northwards. Walking into the pine clad hillside the last of the slate roofed houses are left behind. The trail climbs steadily to the pass at 13,000 feet (3,960m). From the pass the peaks of the Dhaulagiri Massif on the far side at about 12,5000 feet.
Day 11 Kyami Danda 3109m
From Phagune Dhuri the trail drops through thick forest and an open glade at Thinkur to the Gustung Khola where lunch can be had as there is no water from here until camp. From the Gustung Khola the trail climbs steeply through forest to the ridgeline with views west towards the Bheri depression and northwards towards the snow clad mountains. The campsite at Kyami Danda is a small grassy opening on the ridgeline.
Day 12 Dulby 3202m 6-7 hrs hike
Descend steeply to the village of Pelma with a primary school and about ten families of Kamis, Chettris and Magars. A taste of the flat roofed architecture that is universal from here on. The village of Yamkar on the opposite side above the Pelma Khola is reached in another hour. Lunch stop here or at the river below. The trail to the villages of Malikot branches off towards the west from here while the trail to Duley climbs steeply to the ridge above Yamkhar. From the ridge descend slightly through forested hillsides to ascend again to a 5-hut tea-shop stop of Duley in a small clearing in the forest.
Day 13 Phupall Daha 4230m 6 walking hrs
Leaving Duley the trail climbs about 2,000 feet to Duley Dewrali and then drops down into the Sheng Khola gorge. Follow the stream along the right bank up the tortiously carved valley through crumbling shell mountainsides. Lunch at a side stream coming off the hillside. the trail continues up the valley passing shepherds' huts and several streams to turn right leaving the river to climb to a small marshy lake called Phupal Daha. there is a beautiful camp site here.
Day 14 Above Sahar Tara 3170m 8-9 walking hrs, depends on snow conditions
Leaving camp the trail climbs gradually for about 500 feet to Phupal Bhanjyang. Now we are cutting across the Dhaulagiri Range with the Churne Himal just visible to the north. From here it is a two mile gradual descent to the Saure Khola which also offers excellent camping sites. This area is rich in wildlife like the blue sheep, herds of which can be observed grazing on the mountainsides. Himalayan fox, another rare animal, might also be seen around here. After crossing the Aaure Stream the trail climbs steadily for about 1,500 feet to the Jangla Bhanjyang at an altitude of 14,400 feet. Marked by the customary pile of rocks and prayer flags fluttering in the wild the pass cuts through a cleft between two hillocks. Below the pass the trail descends gradually to the Thanke Danda from where views towards the Kagmara Range and further to the Kanjiroba Himal are very good. The Bheri valley at Dunai, and down to the right, the villages around Tarakot are also visible. Continue down the treeline to camp in an opening well above the first village. Today's lunch can be had before crossing the pass on open grassy lawn by the stream or packed lunch to be provided in snow bound conditions.
Day 15 Tarakot 2561m 3-4 walking hrs
Today's walk is a short but steep descent through Samthaling Gaon and Saharatara to Tarakot. Situated above the Barbung Khola these villages are inhabited by Kham Magars, an ethnic group with animistic traditions. With their flat roofed houses these villages are reminiscent of Pueblo Indian settlements. Camp can be set up directly below the village of Tarakot besides the small stream. From here the monastery of Tarakot is immediately behind and above the camp on a ridge and can be visited in the afternoon. Lunch at camp.
Day 16 Dunai 2042m 6 walking hrs

Day 18 Reyaji Village 2927m 6 walking hrs
The trail stays well above the river in the lush forest from here. The Suli Gad valley is forested by thick strands of Juniper trees - probably the finest seen anywhere in Nepal. Climbing again for above the river the trail reaches an altitude of 10,500 feet only to plunge down to the river again. Lunch at the river and continue through the forest along the river to a bridge at Riyaji village an inconspicuous settlement on the opposite bank where camp can be set up for the night.
Day 19 Phoksundo Lake 3506m 6 walking hrs

Above here is the Park Headquarters and the warden's office at a place called Sumdo where park entrance fees are collected. The road to Murwa village is along the left bank and the trail towards Phoksindo is on the opposite side crossed here by a wooden bridge. A little farther on lunch can be had by the river. From Pungmo the trail leads up the valley along the left bank to cross it about two hours from here to the right hand bank. Views of the Kangchunne and Kanjeilarwa peaks are very nice along today's walk. The valley is well forested with juniper and birch, and wild animals like the musk deer inhabit this area. Further up the valley blue sheep might be seen on the mountain slopes. The trail climbs steadily turning westward once above treeline and keeping high above the river. Camp is made on some level ground below the Kangmara Pass at the altitude of 13,800 feet.

The river we have been following this afternoon is called the Garpung Khola.
Day 23 Hurikot 2652m 6 waking hrs
Following the Gharpung Khola high above it along the right bank the trail turns north above the confluence with the Jagdulla Khola to descend down to the Army Check Post. Hurikot is largish village where the people claim to be Chettris of Rokai, Barwai, Burathoi and Thakuri families. Here also some Bhotes from Saldang spend the winter grinding maize at the water mills run by Kamis of this village.
Day 24 River Camp 3506m 6-7 walking hrs
Crossing the stream coming off the Jagdulla Lekh at Hurikot the trail goes up along the ridge to the north-west to climb Barbarey Lekh Pass at an altitude of about 12,500 feet. This is a longish gradual climb and the pass itself is a long ridgeline quite unlike most passes. Views north towards the Kanjiroba Himal are very fine from here. Descending into a fine forest of pine, spruce, fir, and oak camp is made in a forest clearing beside the river flowing down this valley.
Day 25 Dillikot Village 2622m 6 walking hrs
From camp below Barbarey Lekh we follow the trail down steam through oak and pine forest to the village of Chorta also known as Napukuna past another small settlement of newly established village. There is camping place above and below the village.
Day 27 Jumla 2317m 3 walking hrs
A half day's walk along the wide Tila valley past paddy fields and the village of Dipayal brings the trek to Jumla Town where camp is set up near the airstrip. After lunch there will be time to visit the town and relax at camp.
Day 28 Fly Jumla to Nepalgunj and Kathmandu
Note: All heights are approximate at best. We had two altimeters which we used set at Kathmandu airport at 4,400 feet. It was shown to record about 600 feet less than altitudes given in trekking maps and other books. Although the heights might be approximate it gives a good idea of altitude gained/lost on a day to day basis along the trail which will be of
great help.Back To
