カンチェンジュンガ・トレック

7.Kanchenjunga Trek

Kanchenjunga Trek - 22 Days

Kanchenjunga means"the mountain of jewels" and it is said that the famous sage Guru Padmasambhava buried the treasures of knowledge on this most beautiful mountain . It is so revered by the locals that the Lepchas of Sikkim dance in the tribute once a year. A 22 to 25 day trek takes you to the snowline through high pastures and into the romance of the mountain jewels. Much more than trek, it is a journey of discovery.

The Kanchenjunga range is possibly the last unexplored region of Eastern Nepal. Breathtaking views of the vast Himalayan range can be seen from the majority of the route's trails. Thick forests of rhododendron trees in the lower region and Yak grazing pastures at high altitudes always astonish us.

This is a sparsely populated area. Mainly Sherpas, Limbu, Rai and Gurung communities live here. The people are not accustomed to receiving overseas tourists at their doorsteps and show great hospitality. The wild flowers are in full bloom during the months of April and May. Clear views of the mountains are also more likely during this period.

We recommend starting this trek by flying from Kathmandu to Biratnagar on a scheduled flight and then chartering a flight to Taplejung. At the end of the trek, a charter flight from Tumlingtar to KTM is recommended as it's very difficult to get seats on the scheduled flights.

Day 1 Lalikharka 4 walking hrs

We have an easy walk from Taplejung to our camp in Lalikharka village. There are views of Makalu and East Kanchunjenga range (2,100m). We have lunch at Gupte. Tambawa village can be seen at a distance.

Day 2 Khesawa 6 walking hrs

We descend to Phewa Khola, where we lunch. We again climb up to a pass and then to Khesawa (2,200m) where we camp and have good views of snowy mountain range.

Day 3 Mamamkhe 6 1/2 walking hrs

After descending an hour towards Phewa river and taking easy ridge trail for 2 hrs., we camp at Mamamkhe (1,790m). This is a large Limbu village of about 100 families.

Day 4 Yamphudin 6 walking hrs

We take an easy walk of gradual ascent for 6 hrs to camp at Yamphudin (2,320m). This area is inhabited by Sherpa and Rai communities. Yamphudin is the last village before reaching the Kanchunjenga B.C.

Day 5 Amji Kharka 6 walking hrs

This is the most difficult day on the trek. We will take pack lunch because there is no water available until the camp spot. After steep uphill and snowhill climbs, we camp near the river side where there is rhododendron forest.

Day 6 Trong Den 7 walking hrs

We continue along the right trail of Shibuwa Khola (river) and gradually climb up to Lase Tang for lunch. We camp at Trong Den after passing by landslides through forests with bamboo trees and over a river.

Day 7 Tseram 4 1/2 walking hrs

We follow the river up to Amti Pati for about 2 hrs where we have our lunch. We continue again for about 2 1/2 hrs along the river side, and camp at Tseram.

Day 8 Ramjee 4 walking hrs

This is the last point of forests and mountains. We will reach the glaciers after a couple of hours. We follow the Yalung river until Ramjee. The Yalung glacier is the main source of the Yalung river.

Day 9 Ramjee Rest and Acclimatization

Early in the morning of this day, we go with a pack lunch and return to the camp at Ramjee after sight-seeing on the Yalung glacier (4,800m). Kanchunjenga, Jannu Himal, Yalung Khang and Kumbakarna are closely seen from here.

Day 10 Tseram 3 1/2 walking hrs

We take an easy walk to Tseram and camp there

Day 11 Langpa Sarpa 6 walking hrs

We ascend to Langpa Sarpa after crossing the Sinion La pass (4,700m) and camp.

Day 12 Ghungsha 4 walking hrs

From here we descend to the Ghungsha (3,200m) .This is the last outpost in this area before the Tibet border. In case of emergency, a wire less contact to KTM is available here. There is a check post and postal service in this small village.

Day 13 Kyapra 5 walking hrs

After crossing the Tamur Khola river, we continue along a trail through a forest for about 2 hrs.We lunch at a Tibetan refugee camp. After lunch, we visit the monastery and carpet factory. Then we walk through the forest for about 3 hours and camp at Kyapra.

Day 14 Amjilassa 6 walking hrs
