After seeking permission from the Nepali government for the past decade, the 62-year-old Italian climber has finally being given the go ahead to be the first western climber to tackle the mountain. All visitors must have permits to climb - but Messner is refusing to reveal which mountain it is. "It is an unknown mountain and I won't tell you which it is - then there will be lots of people there," he told Times Online. "I will be going there in spring 2008, then afterwards I am going back to Patagonia to cross an ice field. I still climb a little but always go on an expedition once a year." The indefatigable climber twice conquered Everest, in 1978 (without supplementary oxygen) and in 1980, and was the first to climb all 14 mountains higher than 8,000 metres - but he has no interest in returning to the world's highest mountain. "I was last there in 2003 and it took me two hours to walk across base camp. There's even an internet cafe on the south side," he says. "Mountaineering begins where tourism ends and what you see on Everest today is typical tourism. Last spring there were 500 people waiting to go to the top in one day. "It is like London in the rush hour. Everest is not a mountain any more, it's not even a hill. It's a highway - I wouldn't go up Everest again if you paid me. I go where tourists don't go" Speaking in London this week, Messner revealed plans for his fifth and final mountain museum in South Tyrol, the northernmost province of Italy that is his home. Describing himself as "a climber at the end of his llife," he said the fifth museum - to be housed in a donated castle - will be devoted to mountain people. South Tyrol depends on "high-class tourism," said Messner, and each of the musems, which attract 100,000 visitors a year, are devoted to different aspects of mountaineering as opposed to artefacts. "Mountaineering is only 230 years old and that history is not strong enough to fill a room," he says. His fourth museum, the Messner Mountain Museum Firmian at Castle Sigmondskron, overlooking Bolzano, opened last spring with mountain mysticsm to the fore: the religions, music, folkore, art and culture of mountains are represented in a "meeting point for man and mountain," said Messner. "At the age of 50-55, I learned to give back what I learned on the mountain. It is about people, the sherpas. I learned from them how to survive on a mountain so this is not really about opening museums, it is a place of encounter. I use the quote from William Blake: 'Where men and mountains meet, big things are happening.'" |

"During the peace process we could not handle the business," he said. "Tourism has dried up from France, because there is a very strong travel advisory from the French government, the Germans, the Dutch are also not doing too well." Tourism officials fear the situation may worsen after rebels mounted their first air strike at an air force base near the country's international airport in March. The raid prompted Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airlines to temporarily suspend daily flights in and out of Sri Lanka. Tourism officials have begun a massive advertising campaign in key markets such as India to calm fears, and point out that the fighting is in areas far away from the country's beaches and other tourist spots. The story is dramatically different in Nepal, another South Asian country that has witnessed a protracted civil conflict. Nepal's decade-long insurgency is over, and the Maoist rebels have joined an interim government. As a result, tourists are flocking back to the country, where some of the world's tallest peaks are a big draw. That is good news for an industry that saw tourist arrivals decline steadily since 1999, when they had peaked at half a million. The head of Nepal's Tourist Board, Aditya Baral, says there are hopes that tourist arrivals will rise substantially this year. "We are quite optimistic in terms of tourist arrival, and as per the ground survey we are doing in terms of arrival we are almost about 35 percent increase compared to last year this month," said Baral. Tourism provides employment for an estimated half a million people in Nepal. And the tourist industries of both Sri Lanka and Nepal are significant foreign exchange earners for the two countries. |

Dorjee Sherpa, a member of the team who has scaled the Everest 13 times, said: “This expedition is dedicated to our martyrs, their families and all those injured in Janandolan II and democracy.” He said the team is carrying the flags of eight parties for their contribution in ending the insurgency. The team has Ang Nima Sherpa as the expedition leader. Ang Rita Sherpa, also known as the Snow Leopard, Ensu Rai, Tsering Phintso Sherpa, Dorjee Sherpa, Bhuwan Singh Rai and Usha Bista are members of the team. Handing over the flags of Nepal and the Loyalty Academy to Dorjee Sherpa, Laba Prasad Tripathee, spokesperson, Ministry of Education and Sports, lauded the expedition for planning to flutter the flag of an educational institution atop the Everest. Chanting Buddhist and Hindu religious hymns, he wished the mountaineers a safe journey. |

Rang Sarathi from Kathmandu and Marangburu Santhali Kalakar Parishad of Morang and Mandapika Kala Samuha, who were never seen in stage before this, will also perform during the festival. The Ibsen theatre festival organised by Gurukul had attracted thousands of viewers, some returning without being able to get tickets even after waiting for hours in queue. The festival begins with Arohan's Maya Deviko Sapana at 5 p.m. According to organisers, most of the plays selected for this festival are political in nature and influenced by themes like class conflict, contemporary politics, slavery, the impact of the 'people's war', psychology and the withering condition of feudalism. Alongside the theatre festival, there will be discussion and interaction sessions between the directors and the audience, so that all can focus on building better quality of theatre. |

Most of the better known hotels are already taken away with large inflow of tourists for the last one week, and the trend continues to grow. According to hoteliers, some 1,000 tourists are arriving in Pokhara every day by road, flights, including those returning from trekking. Hoteliers say the number of foreign tourists has nearly doubled in the last one week. Foreigners have booked over 100 rooms in Pokhara's only 5-star hotel, Fulbari Resort in the last two days. According to Krishna Acharya, front desk officer at the resort, all rooms in the hotel are "fully packed" for new year eve which falls on Friday. "We are unable to offer accommodation to tourists even if they pledge handsome payments," said Biplav Poudel, vice-chairman of Regional Hotel Association. According to tourism entrepreneurs, Pokhara is receiving huge turnout of tourists also because hotels in Kathmandu and its neighboring outskirts are already packed. As many tourists have chosen to come to Pokhara, even the airlines have declared their Pokhara-bound tickets sold out. To address the shortage, Yeti Airlines (YA) flew its 30-seater aircraft, which made 10 flights on Thursday alone. "Nearly 300 passengers are coming to Pokhara daily by air," said Amrit Singh, station manager at YA Pokhara office. Similarly, Buddha Airlines increased its regular flights from six to eight on Thursday. Equal number of tourists are entering Pokhara by road. According to Hari Sharma, Pokhara chapter chairman of Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA), some 8-9 tourist buses carry over 300 foreign tourists to the resort town every day. However, he said the number could have been more if highway transportation entrepreneurs had not prohibited tourist buses from carrying domestic tourists. Likewise, the number of tourists returning from the popular Annapurna trekking route are also increasing as Pokhara gears up for New Year celebrations. However, tourism entrepreneurs in Pokhara do not have records of Nepali tourists visiting the city. "Some 400 motorcyclists from Kathmandu will be arriving in Pokhara on Friday for the new year eve," said Bacchuram Tiwari, chairman of Pokhara Hotel Entrepreneurs' Association. The association has been organizing attractive packages, street festivals and cultural programs to make Pokhara the most sought-after destination, during the New Year. |
