Govt relaxes provisions for international airlines
15th August 2007
In anticipation of greater tourist arrivals during the
forthcoming autumn season, government has formulated flexible provisions for the
international airlines flying to Nepal. According to a decision by the
ministry of culture, tourism and civil aviation (MoCTCA) today, international
airlines currently flying to Nepal could operate four more flights a week from
September 1 till December 31. They are free to choose the type of aircraft for
these additional flights. However, the new provision will not be applicable
unless airlines have utilised the seat capacity and frequency provided by the
bilateral air service agreements (ASA) between Nepal and the concerned countries
from where the airlines operate. The government has designated the Civil
Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), the aviation regulator, to coordinate with
concerned aeronautical authorities in respective countries for the increased
schedule flights. The government has also relaxed the provision for seasonal
charter flights. CAAN has now been designated to issue permission for interested
operators for seasonal charter flights when needed from September 1 to December
end. Earlier, the airlines had to apply in advance at the ministry for approval
of such flights.
The government’s new decision comes in the wake of increasing tourist arrivals
via air routes but lack of adequate air seats on major routes. A couple
of major international airlines including Thai Airways, Qatar Airways and
China Southern Airlines have already sought the government’s nod to increase
frequency and seat capacity.
The airlines’ interests for increasing frequency and seat capacity match
with the rising tourist arrivals to Nepal, as the country witnessed a significant
rise of 35.6 per cent in visitor arrivals during the first seven months
of this year. A total of 193,211 tourists came to Nepal as of July 2007
via air only. An
interesting fact to note is that not a single tourist generating country saw a
negative growth till July 2007, as the month alone saw an increment of 25 per
cent against the previous year. If such a trend continues, total tourist
arrivals this year will break all past records.

【詳細英文記事】
The number of Indian tourists visiting the famous pilgrimage site of Muktinath
are on rise. Most Indian tourists board charter flights from Pokhara or
Kathmandu and land near Muktinath temple while some prefer trekking to
arrive at the temple.
At least 5,000 Indian tourists visited the temple since the middle of
March last year, a staff at the Muktinath Area Development Committee, Rudra
Nath Sharma Poudel said. Their visits had dwindled during the conflict,
he added. A pilot with Manang Air, Sarina Gurung said as many as five flights
were made now-a-days to Muktinath when weather remains fine. Most of the
flight passengers are from India and each flight carries two-dozen passengers,
she added. Normally, it takes 35 minutes in a helicopter to reach Muktinath
from Pokhara. Gurung underlined the need for greater publicity for Muktinath
abroad. In addition to Manang Air, Sri Air is also making charter flights
to Muktinath. Its helicopters make four to five flights a day. The helicopter
returns from the temple with the same passengers after a gap of an hour,
allowed for visit to the temple. However, a hotelier at Ranipauwa bazaar
near the temple, Laxmi Tulachan says that business is not good even after
surge in the number of Indian tourists. They return by the same flight
without strolling around, Tulachan who is also the owner of Hotel Muktinath,
says. Muktinath temple lies on the bank of Gandaki river in Muktinath village
development committee, 26 km east of Mustang district headquarters, Jomsom.
Muktinath is reachable on foot from Pokhara through Myagdi district headquarters
in Beni or through Tatopani of Myagdi’s tourist area in Ghorepani. Visitors
to Muktinath on regular flights include only a few as it is difficult to
buy air tickets, head at Jomsom airport Rajan Pokhrel said. Some Indian
visitors choose to travel by road. Beni-Jomsom road is under construction
at Mustang and Myagdi districts which has made it convenient for pilgrims
to visit Muktinath, said president of the Jeep Entrepreneurs’ Committee
Jayendra Thakali. Jeeps and motorcycles ply on the finished section of
the road which has eased the trip. A housewife from Bangalore, Sudha Shankar
said it was great to visit a place like Muktinath. The place is sce-nic
and panoramic, she said. A shopkeeper at Ranipauwa near the temple, Rangaraj
Shastri said most Indian visitors come from South India. There are more
visitors during Dashain and Janai Purnima, he added. According to Poudel,
the temple receives 35,000 visitors annually, out of which 10 per cent
come from India.

【詳細英文記事】
Tourist arrivals to Nepal via air have increased by 9.6 percent in the
month of June. Nepal Tourism Board said a total of 23,502 visitors entered
Nepal through air. According to the figures released by Immigration Office at Tribhuvan
International Airport (TIA), the European market has recorded a strong increase
by 39 percent, keeping on the ascending trend of arrivals. The Indian market
recorded a negative growth of 12.8 percent, nevertheless this market alone
contributed more than 50 percent in the total arrivals by air. Overall Asian
market registered a commendable upsurge in arrivals with a notable rise of 289.5
percent from China, 235.4 percent from Taiwan and 11.7 percent from Japan.
The major tourist generating markets from both Europe and Americas
registered a healthy growth this month, despite some records of negative trend
from France and Italy. Canada and USA market grew by 81.4 percent and 50 percent
respectively. Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands and Norway recorded a remarkable
growth, more than double arrivals, compared to the corresponding month last
year. Other major markets with bigger share in total arrivals from European
segment like UK, Germany and Spain also showed a good growth of 48.1 percent, 7
percent and 71.7 percent respectively.
The total arrival figures till June 2007 has reached to 167,133, up by
45,538 arrivals compared to the same period last year. "This clearly shows that tourism sector is manifesting the strong
message of gradual recovery. The drop in the arrivals from Indian market,
considered as a major volume market, is a matter of concern," the NTB press
release states.
"Frequent strikes, street protest and demonstration, hurdles in vehicle movement in the country, mainly in the Terai region are some of the factors contributing indirectly to retard the healthy growth of tourism," NTB further said.
