Around Annapurna : Thorung La Trek -22 Days

The southern slopes of Manaslu and Annapurna ranges are heavily settled and with terraced fields except the higher regions which support thick forests of rhododendron and fir. This is the region the home to Gurungs, Magars, the famous Gurkha people of Nepal.

The small terraced fields on the mountain slopes supporting crops of millet and wheat, corn and barley and small flocks of sheep and goats. The Manang tribes are traditionally a trading race. They are Buddhist by religion and Tibetan by origin, and their architecture and lifestyle are quite different to other tribes in the southern slopes. This trekking to the Manang valley and into the rain shadow of the Annapurna ranges offers dramatic scenery of changing colour.

We meet Thakalis and Mustang tribes controlling the busy trading and pilgrimage trail along the Kali Gandaki. We also meet Gurungs and Magars when we move through the gap between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna into the water zones.

This is one of the classic and most rewarding treks in Nepal. On the whole trek, you will always have magnificent views of all central Himalayan ranges.

Day 1 Turture (Toor-Too-re) 2395m 3 walking hrs

We drive five hours from Kathmandu along the Trisuli and Marsyangdi gorges to Dumre village (1,900ft) . We then trek through the terraced field of rich paddies slowly gaining elevation, giving good view of Boudha Himal (21,891ft) and Himal Chuli (25,895ft). Turture is on the back of the Marsayangdi river, which originates n Manang glacier.

Day 2 Phalen - Sangu 1210ft 6 walking hrs

This day is quite hot and dusty leading us through the valley settlements. We follow the Marsyandi river and a new fair weather road under construction. We pass Tarkughat village, Bhote Odhar before descending to the Thakali bazaar of Phalen-Sangu.

Day 3 Khuldi 2592ft 6 walking hrs

We continue along the mostly flat trail, until after the villages of Besi Sahar, an emerging township with many government offices. Then the trail narrows and the valley becomes a deep river gorge. After crossing a long suspension bridge on the Marsayangdi river we enter the trading village of Khudi, a Gurung village.

Day 4 Baundanda 4000ft 6 walking hrs

We move northwards up the valley by crossing several suspension bridges and passing several beautiful waterfalls. The peaks of Lamjung (22,291'), Manaslu ( 26,760') and Peak 29 (24,652') are towering above us. This Baundada village supports the last shops of any size before Jomsom.

Day 5 Changje 4495ft 5 walking hrs

We descend to the higher reachers of the Marshyangdi river. Then we continue on the west bank climbing high over a ridge, to rejoin the east bank trail over a suspension bridge at Sange. We then ascend through rhododendron and pine forest. The valley is now very deep and shadowed under steep gorge we meet more locals of Tibetan stocks.

Day 6 Bagarchap 7120ft 6 walking hrs

After climbing steadily to Tal, a small Gurung village at the foot of a large waterfall, we are now entering Manang district. After leaving Tal, we move for Dharnpani village (6,103') where our trekking permits are checked and we enjoy a cup of tea. Then we climb through forests to Bagarchap, the first village on the trek with typical Tibetan style architecture.

Day 7 Chame 8859ft 6 walking hrs

On this day, our trail bears west, Manaslu forming a splendid backdrop and Annapurna II (26,041' appearing occasionally to the south. We continue through fine forests of pine and fir, resting at the hamlets of Charku, Thangse and Kuparkodo. As we move forward to Chame, views of Annapurna improve dramatically.

Day 8 Pisang 10400ft 6 walking hrs

We have to criss-cross the river all day and pass through the narrow and steep sided gorge. Before getting Pisang village, we stop at the top of a ridge to get our first view of the Manang valley, wide U-shaped valley hanging between two lines of snow peaks.

Day 9 Braga 11287ft 5 walking hrs

We descend to the broad and flat forested valley, past a small STOL airstrip, under construction and cross the river again for Braga village of 200 houses stacked on top of each other, flat roofs forming verandahs.

Day 10 Manang 11615ft 2 walking hrs

We visit Braga monastery in the morning which is the biggest monastery in the district. We can see an outstanding display of statues, thankas and manuscripts. After lunch a short walk takes us to Manang.

Day 11 Manang Rest and Acclimatization

The day is given to restore acclimatization and exploring Manang village of about 500 flat roofed houses. This village is set picturesquely amongst spectacular scenery of Annapurna II, Annapurna III (24,787') and Gangapura (24,457') to the south , Tilicho (23,400') and the Grand Barrier to the west and Chulu West (21,599') and Chulu East (10,880') to the north.

Day 12 Camp 14437ft 5 walking hrs

Day 13 Muktinath 12009ft 7 walking hrs

This day, we are crossing a high mountain pass. This pass is technically not so difficult but we have to take slow walk to take into account the complication of altitude and possible snow. We reach the top (17,771'). After 4 hrs. walk and we enjoy some absolutely stunning high Himalayan scenery. The whole Annapurna ranges in the south; the Mukut and Mustang Himal in the west and the incredibly deep Kali Gandaki valley; and the peaks of Thorungste (21,268') and Chulu in the north. From here we have steep and rough descent but on the way we will have excellent view of Dhaulagiri (26,795')

Day 14 Muktinath Rest Day

After a long trek we rest here and visit a Buddhist monastery and a pagoda style temple dedicated to Vishnu. Muktinath is an important pilgrimage spot for both Hindus and Buddhists. The most interesting aspect of the area is the spot where burning natural gas issues from the rock and from

the same place a sprouts, a small water spring-earth, fire and water. An important religious combination.

Day 15 Jomsom 8900ft 6 walking hrs

We descend steadily to the valley floor over 5,000m below through a dramatic arid landscape and continue like that to Jomsom. Jomsom is a major village on the Kali Gandaki trading route. So, this village always finds busy.
